Last Practice Race Before Southern XC- Gorrick Spring Rd 2

i had my last practice race before the first Southern XC Series in two weeks time, Gorrick Spring Series Rd 2.

I started the race feeling quite sleepy and not fully rested, i am really looking forward to warmer weather and more daylight.

I held back on my initial effort so my first lap time was a bit slower than I could have achieved, I could see Jody pushing away at the start and felt it would take too much to hold with the leading group. On each lap I managed to push away from my nearest contender (Joe Griffiths)  but was loosing time in the technical sections due to gradual loss of air from my front tyre. I was also struggling to feed as I was having to collect bottles from the ground.

By the fifth lap (which i thought was my 4th) I was starting to feel my legs (and arms) on the climbs. On the 6th lap no-one else was in sight so I stopped and pumped my front tyre up, which helped vastly.

I was 6th 5:46mins behind Jody Crawforth.

I still need to sort a few things out, make sure i fit my tyres a couple of days in advance, eat more gels during the race, count my laps correctly and ride faster...in the technical sections.

Michael Guilford Race Blog Intro

I am starting a blog in order to record my racing for VC Meudon

I am returning to race for VC Meudon having raced for Silva for 1.5 years

About me:

I have been MTB XC racing for 3 years now, racing sport category in 2011, Expert in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

I have also raced cyclocross and road, competing in some of the National Trophy Cyclocross races in 2012.

I will post up my significant results in this blog, as well as results for races in 2014 as they take place.

About my training (without giving too much away!):

My training for 2014 season has consumed quite a lot of the winter this year. My goals for 2014-2019 led me to focus on specific aspects of my cycling that i need to improve in order to progress, and this meant some long hours on and off the bike to improve endurance. Although, I am self coached I have received help from various sport professionals, I now feel that I have a strategy and training plan that will help me to achieve my goals and to continually improve.

I am now (January 2014) reaching the key part of my training, only two months to go to see if all the hard work has paid off.
